Similac announced a recall of certain lot numbers of its powdered infant formula due to "the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product." According to the FDA, "the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, however, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract." The FDA advises parents to seek medical attention for any child who has GI symptoms which persist for more than a few days.
This recall applies only to powdered formula and does not include any of Similac specialty formula lines: Similac Expert Care™ Alimentum®, Elecare ®, Similac Expert Care™ Neosure ®, Similac® Human Milk Fortifier.
To find out if your canister of formula has been recalled, visit the Similac website and enter the lot number, which can be found on the bottom of the product.

Our container came back as "recall" and our 16 month old has been sick for about five days. We had a routine stool sample analyzed (before seeing the recall), which came back as abnormal. But the guidance was not specific-- simply to keep her at home, make sure she's hydrated, and give her the BRAT foods. I'm unclear on the nature of this beetle/larvae...do you think the symptoms will abate once the formula is no longer given? Is medication needed, and if so what's recommended? Do they know anything about the actual nature of the gastrointestinal illness?
ReplyDeleteGiven your child's persistent symptoms I would contact his healthcare provider again and update him or her as to the situation. He or she will probably want to see your daughter back in the office. Similac's parent company, Abbott, has not released any more information regarding the beetle to the public. However, if needed, your child's pediatrician can contact Abbott to obtain further information regarding the specifics of the beetle/larvae.
